roboBLOG 2003: November & December 0312.11 :
Miramax hates you. Plus: Why have just a hot dog when you can have an
Octodog?
0312.09 :
Ewan MacGregor wants to be James Bond. Plus:
Mickey Mouse's suicide attempts from
October, 1933. (They begin in the 10/18 strip).
0312.08 :
Rolling Stone interviews Steve Jobs. Plus:
snowglobe terrorism.
0312.07 : Behold Mel Gibson's
The Passion of the Christ (which was the
closing film at BNAT 5 today, and is quite stunning).
0312.06 :
Robogeek @ Butt-Numb-A-Thon 5 Moblog
0312.05 : Tomorrow my pal Harry
's Butt-Numb-A-Thon 5 will kick off
at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in downtown
Austin. And this year -- thanks to my trusty
Treo 270 --
I will be intermittently moblogging the 24-hour moviegoing marathon for the very first time
(assuming a signal, battery life, and consciousness, of course) at
www.phlog.net/user/robogeek. Sadly, however, I
won't be able to share any photos, since a) cameras aren't allowed this year, and b) Catherine
Zeta-T-Mobile still hasn't released their compliant
Treo 600 yet
(even though Sprint's has been out for two months now, followed by Cingular and AT&T; sigh...).
Anyway, this'll be my first experiment in moblogging, so please bear with me (and feel free to
e-mail or SMS me during the event). 0312.04 : Tonight (10pm / 9pm CST),
ABC's
PrimeTime Thursday goes
behind-the-scenes of The Return of the King
for the hour. 0312.03 : Viva Sonambulo!
0312.02 : My pal Sachin highly recommends
Five Star Laser for all your Asian import DVD needs.
0312.01 : Tonight (8pm / 7pm CST), AMC
airs the American Cinematheque
Tribute to Nicole Kidman,
which took place on the 14th
at the Beverly Hilton.
Ah, Nicole... 0311.30 : Today's
New York Times Magazine is devoted to the theme of
Inspiration, and has a
fascinating article
commemorating the two year anniversary of the iPod.
(P.S.: And in case you missed it, check out the
Movies 2003 issue from
two weeks ago, which was full of cool stuff like
this article on The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and
this one on Tim Burton.
0311.29 : Just so you know, the
Buffy the Vampire Slayer PlayStation 2 game
Chaos Bleeds
is seriously addictive. And you can now snag it for yourself for
under $20.
(Just so you know.)
0311.23 : The Return of the King
is the cover story of the 12/1 issue of
Newsweek. (24 days and counting...) Meanwhile, in completely
unreleated news, The Observer has an
interview
with the lovely and talented (and, yes, I agree - quite underrated)
Kelly MacDonald
0311.22 : Before I hit the road to
WizardWorld TX today, I just
gotta pass along a couple choice links Harry IM'ed me in
the middle of the night. Check out the
stunning Northern Lights over Scotland, due to recent solar storm activity. But you know
what'll really freak you out?
GloFish. That's right, genetically engineered pet zebra fish... that glow. Their
creator says "there is no evidence the fish will pose any threat to the environment." Uh-huh.
They'll go on sale in January for about $5 each. 0311.21 : Almost forgot... Earlier this week,
IGN FilmForce ran a great in-depth
interview with Andy Merrill,
the brilliant mind (and voice) behind
Cartoon Network's Brak.
(Kudos to Ken Plume.) Oh, and just for fun, be sure to check out this awesome online
gallery of Japanese TV Superheroes of the
Seventies. Banzai! 0311.21 : Hey, look! It's JAPANESE ROBOT MADNESS FRIDAY at robogeek.com!
Woo-hoo! First up, we have the
world's smallest microbot (from Seiko Epson). But it
gets better! Check out
Paro,
the "therapeutic" robot baby harp seal. (Really.) And yet, even that isn't nearly as freaky as
The Actroid, or "Actress Robot" from
Kokoro Dreams that talks, blinks, and just generally creeps me the hell out. 0311.20 : Salon.com has an
interview
today with one of my favorite people in the world, the illustrious
Berkeley Breathed, whose new work of genius
"Opus" premieres this Sunday
in 160 newspapers nationwide. (I also highly recommend his gorgeous and funny new book
Flawed Dogs.) P.S.: Oh, and MSNBC has a funny
interview with Opus himself. 0311.19 : Yesterday,
Guillermo previewed the teaser trailer for Hellboy
(which includes my "bump in the night" line!) to select media in L.A., and conducted a brief Q&A.
Since then, the internet has been abuzz... check out effusive reports from
Counting Down,
CHUD,
Superhero Hype,
Comics2Film,
Yahoo Movies and/or
IGN FilmForce. Tomorrow, the
teaser will hit Yahoo
Movies and [the evil] Access Hollywood, and will then screen Saturday afternoon at the
WizardWorld Texas
comic convention in Arlington (during Guillermo's 2pm Q&A). Then on Monday it'll be
available in QuickTime format, and Wednesday it'll
unspool in theaters nationwide attached to
The Missing.
Got all that? God, I hope so. (P.S.: And yes, I'll be attending
WW TX with my favorite Mexican
on Saturday. Should be fun.) 0311.18 : FYI, I will be speaking at tomorrow's
Reel Women
meeting (7:30pm at the
Women & Their Work gallery, 1710 Lavaca in Austin).
0311.17 :
The Hollywood Reporter has an
interview with and
profile of uber-producer
Jerry Bruckheimer (by Stephen Galloway). Well worth a read.
0311.16 : Cartoon Network
now sells
Space Ghost's Desk & Chair for a mere $39,995 via their online
Ultimate Holiday Wish List gift shop,
where you can also order your very own
Dexter's Laboratory and
Powerpuff Girls bedroom for $99,995. Each. 0311.15 : This Tuesday (11/18), the charming and lovely (and admittedly
Martha-obsessed)
Jennifer Garner will be the guest on
Martha Stewart Living "to learn to truss a traditional Thanksgiving turkey with all the trimmings,
including a simple recipe for Cranberry Cornbread Stuffing." Then on Wednesday,
Sarah McLachlan "whips up a delectable currant cake" and
Bill Cosby "demonstrates how to build innovative tin can
robots." I swear I'm not making this up! I never dreamed I'd ever watch this show, but how on
earth can I possibly resist all this? My TiVo is set!
(Check local listings.) P.S.: FYI, roboTV has been updated,
and there are now a million TiVo users.
(Join us!) 0311.14 : Nearly eight months after it went off the air with the bold
promise "TO BE CONTINUED", Farscape is preparing its
return in Australia via a mini-series, according to
IGN FilmForce. Expect an official announcement soon, and stay tuned to
SaveFarscape.com for more news. (And in belated news,
Invader Zim is coming to DVD next Spring!) 0311.13 : Who woulda thought a unicycle could ever be cool? Check out the
(fuel cell powered)
Bombadier Embrio, which is the coolest concept vehicle I've seen since the
Dodge Tomahawk. 0311.12 :
New Hellboy poster! 0311.11 : So Carnegie Mellon University has unveiled The Robot Hall of Fame, and the four inaugural
inductees are Unimate, R2-D2,
Sojourner, and
HAL-9000... what? Now wait just a damn minute,
HAL's no robot, he's an A.I.! Shame on you, Carnegie Mellon! Anyway, feel free to
tell them what you think, or
nominate your own favorite actual
robot - like maybe Gort, whose photo graces the nomination page, even though he's not
an inductee. Stupid crackhead Carnegie Mellon monkeys! Personally, I'm nominating El Diablo Robotico.
(See 0311.03.) 0311.10 : Oh my God...
Republic serials on DVD. (And they even take PayPal.) 0311.10 : It's gadgets galore today! First off, Time
shows off their Coolest
Innovations of 2003, and chose Apple's
iTunes Music Store as the
Invention of the Year.
(Runners-up include
Sony's Qrio robot,
a freaky as hell robot cat, and
a genuine Japanese mecha powersuit.
Meanwhile, Popular Science has unveiled their annual Best of What's New, listing their picks for the top 100
tech innovations of the year. (Damn, that's one hell of a bigass TV, and oh,
how I crave the DVR-810H
A>; more details here.) 0311.09 :
Elvis Mitchell ponders the next James Bond in today's
New York Times. 0311.08 : The Guardian
profiles DC Comics
publisher Paul Levitz. 0311.07 :
Boy howdy, this is cool. (Trust me.) 0311.06 : The Onion A.V. Club
interviews Ira Glass
of (the perpetually great) This American Life.
In it, Mr. Glass expresses his addiction to Buffy, his fascination with
America's Next Top Model, his disdain of
Smallville, and his love of TiVo. Great stuff. (Oh, and go buy
Crimebusters & Crossed Wires,
the new audio collection.) 0311.05 :
The Austin American-Statesman eerily reported today
(section B, page 2) that
33-year-old Paul Dykstra of Austin was killed in a car wreck yesterday on 71 near Spicewood.
Thankfully that wasn't me, and happily I am not dead. (And btw, I'm actually 32.) 0311.03 : Wednesday's episode of Angel (9pm/8C on WB) finds our eponymous hero tracking
down a retired Mexican wrestler to help him defeat Texcatcatl, an
ancient Aztec warrior. Really. It is entitled The
Cautionary Tale of Numero Cinco, and you can see the teaser here
A>. (It's written and directed by Jeffrey
Bell.) 0311.02 : A.O. Scott has penned an ode to
Nicole Kidman for today's New York
Times (which also includes an accompanying slideshow). Meanwhile, Harry IM'ed me this disquieting AP article about monkeys terrorizing New
Delhi. 0311.01 : Yesterday at the Austin Chronicle's Halloween
party, my friend Robert Faires tipped me off to this great
article from Thursday's New York
Times about Alex Ross, his
house, and his super-cool Halloween party. (Check out his awesome new
book,
Mythology.) 0309-0310 : Click here for September and October, 2003. 0307-0308 : Click here for July and August, 2003. 0305-0306 : Click here for May and June, 2003. 0303-0304 : Click here for March and April, 2003. 0301-0302 : Click here for January and February, 2003.
