Does anyone out there have the chops to convert this method into a plug-in for Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop? Such a plug-in would convert a black and white photo to full color using data from a color photo of a similar subject.
The technique works by matching a measure of texture, crudely represented as the standard deviation of luminance in a small region around the pixel to be colored, as well as the region's average luminance value. In this way, a smooth sky can be colored blue, for example, while a region of similar luminance but with more detail can be colored green, say, due to it's different texture.
